Bricks for Official State Historical Marker

An official state historical marker is being planned for the former coal mining town of Cardiff, Illinois, located between Dwight and Kankakee.

The area is now part of the Herscher School District. The state has approved a marker for the site, but the sponsoring agency must pay for it.

County West Companion

The Herscher Area Historical Society is raising funds for the marker, which honors all coal miners in northern Illinois. Towards this goal, we are selling paver bricks which will be installed in a memorial patio at the marker site. These bricks will be engraved with names of the donors or with names of anyone you wish to honor. It may be an ancestor who was a coal miner, or another family member who has departed, or it may be your own name as a donor.

Brick and Memorial Information

  • Each brick will have three lines with 13 letters per line, and sell for $75 each.
  • A larger brick is available for $100, which has six lines with 13 letters per line.
  • Donations are tax-deductible.
  • The bricks will be installed in the memorial patio at Cardiff later this year.
  • Deadline for purchase is May 30
